Young Vic

The Young Vic is a theatre on The Cut, near the South Bank in London. It stands in a former butcher’s shop and bomb-site, rebuilt in 1970 from breeze-block and red wooden slats. The main auditorium seats about 420, with a thrust stage that lets actors reach into the audience. Two smaller studios, The Maria and The Clare, seat 150 and 70 and use flexible seating. The building was meant to last five years but became permanent after a 2000s rebuild by Haworth Tompkins. The theatre began in 1970 under Frank Dunlop, staging Molière adaptations and later independent productions. It has drawn leading actors such as Ian Charleson, Vanessa Redgrave and Judi Dench. The Who rehearsed there in 1971, and a memorial marks the 1941 Blitz deaths in the cellars. The Young Vic also supports emerging directors and hosts the Belarus Free Theatre, staging Sarah Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis in secret London locations. Visitors find a red-slat auditorium with a close, informal feel. The foyers and box office occupy the old butcher’s shop, while new dressing rooms and workshops sit behind. Studio shows place the audience near the stage, and the building keeps its 1970s spirit despite modern upgrades. The space reflects the theatre’s aim to make high-quality work accessible without ceremony.
