Norden Farm Centre for the Arts

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts stands on a redeveloped part of the old Norden Farm estate in Maidenhead, Berkshire. The site includes two listed buildings: a Georgian farmhouse and an 18th-century barn. A modern theatre and studio were added below ground level, attached to these older structures. The centre opened in September 2000 after years of planning and fundraising. It was built with support from the National Lottery and local donors. The project cost £9 million, with most funds coming from lottery grants. The centre has earned a strong reputation under directors like Annabel Turpin and Jane Corry. It hosts theatre, comedy, jazz, classical music and literature events. Well-known performers from London’s West End have appeared there. Resident companies include 1157 and Troublemaker Theatre, which runs youth theatre programmes. Every week, up to 2,500 people attend shows, films, classes and workshops. Visitors find a courtyard theatre seating 225, a studio theatre for 100, and a bar-café area. The Georgian farmhouse holds meeting rooms, and the long barn serves as a flexible events space. Artworks by Liza Gough Daniels and Trevor Leat’s living willow sculpture ‘Family Circle’ add to the surroundings. The centre also runs educational programmes for schools. Solar panels provide lower-cost, lower-carbon power to the site.
