Bucklige Welt

The Bucklige Welt is a hilly region in south-eastern Lower Austria, often called the ‘land of a thousand hills’. It lies on the eastern edge of the Alps where the land rises and falls between 375 and 900 metres. Locals know every rise as a Buckl, giving the area its name. The Wechsel massif bounds it to the south-west and the Semmering region to the west. To the north the land slopes down into the Vienna Basin, drained by the Pitten. The region escaped glaciation in the last ice age because of its modest height. The Hochwechsel summit only carries a thin layer of old snow in winter. Three different climates meet here: the south-east belongs to Austria’s Illyrian zone, the northern edge shows Pannonian influences, and the central heights have an alpine transitional climate. This mix shapes the landscape and the way of life. Visitors find rolling hills covered with meadows and forests, ideal for walking and cycling. The Hochwechsel offers wide views across the surrounding countryside. Small villages sit in the valleys, where farms still keep old traditions alive. The Pitten valley provides a gentle route through the hills, while the Rosalia Mountains form a dramatic backdrop. The Bucklige Welt rewards anyone who enjoys quiet, green landscapes far from cities.
