Schloss Schönebeck

Schloss Schönebeck stands in Bremen-Vegesack’s Schönebeck district, built in northern German timber-framed style beside a pond formed by the Schönebecker Aue, a small geest stream that flows into the Weser via Vegesack harbour. The building sits in a landscaped valley setting, its moat fed by the same stream. The site once included a water mill where the pond meets the Aue. The house has belonged to notable families since the 14th century, when local knights first carried the name of Schönebecke. In 1662 the estate passed to Baron Jacob von Schlebusch, and later to Friedrich von der Borch, who added a baroque stone façade in 1705. His grandson Ernst August von der Borch and his wife Henriette von Friesen enlarged the complex after 1749 with the present timber wings. After decades of neglect the city of Bremen bought the castle in 1952 and restored it for public use. Today the castle houses the Heimatmuseum Schloss Schönebeck, documenting Vegesack’s history as a port town. Exhibits cover sailing ships, steam vessels, herring loggers, whaling, early lifeboat services and the travels of local explorer Gerhard Rohlfs. A maritime-themed room is used for civil weddings. Nearby stand the 18th-century steward’s house and the reconstructed Schlosskate, a cottage built with historic timberwork. The surrounding grounds include the pond, the moat and protected parkland once graced by a water mill.
