Grenzdenkmal Wülperode
The Grenzdenkmal Wülperode marks the former inner-German border where the DDR’s barrier once stood. It lies just outside Wülperode in the Harz district, close to Wiedelah in Goslar district, and preserves an original stretch of the concrete wall and fences. Local people from the Heimatverein Abbenrode worked with teachers and pupils from the Fallstein-Gymnasium in Osterwieck to clear the overgrown site and install information boards. The whole area is now protected as a monument. The memorial was deliberately damaged in November 2019 when intruders ripped out several boards and sawed through the main panel on the division of Germany. Police launched an investigation and later replaced the damaged displays. Despite the vandalism, the site remains a quiet place to reflect on the country’s divided past. Visitors walk along a grass path that follows the old barrier line, where rusted posts and wire still mark the route. Information panels explain how the border worked and how it was overcome. The surrounding fields and woods give a sense of how isolated this stretch once was.
