Kinnersley Castle

Kinnersley Castle stands in Herefordshire near the Welsh Borders, just east of Eardisley on the A4112. The present building began as a medieval stone castle built in the 12th century under Henry I. Most of the original fortress has vanished, replaced by an Elizabethan mansion that still shows traces of earlier work. The Vaughns bought the castle in 1588 and remodelled it in the 16th century. Inside, the solar holds one of Herefordshire’s oldest plaster ceilings, rich with carved green men and serpent hounds picked out in gold. The ceiling’s overmantel shows a boy’s head encircled by a serpent, a striking piece of 16th-century craftsmanship. John Vaughan inherited the castle before selling it to Francis Smallman. Today the building serves as the registered office for The Mereon Legacy CIC, a community group preserving the Mereon Matrix, a complex geometric model made of two many-faced polyhedra. Visitors find a quiet country house with fine plasterwork and carved stone details. The solar ceiling remains the most admired feature, its intricate patterns catching the light. Outside, the castle sits among fields and lanes close to the Welsh Marches. The surroundings are peaceful, with few modern intrusions, giving a sense of stepping back into the 16th century.
