Westminster Chapel

Westminster Chapel stands in the City of Westminster, just off Victoria Street near Buckingham Palace. It occupies a corner site on Buckingham Gate, where Castle Lane meets the junction with Petty France. The present building, completed in 1865, replaced an earlier chapel built in 1841. Designed by William Ford Poulton in Lombard Romanesque Revival style, it uses stock brick with red brick and stone dressings. The façade features a gabled front with a triple-arched porch and graduated arcading above. A tower on the right side has coupled arched windows, with its top stage added later in a different style. The chapel has hosted notable pastors over the centuries, including G. Campbell Morgan, Martyn Lloyd-Jones and R. T. Kendall. Lloyd-Jones served for nearly thirty years and led the church to join the Evangelical Fellowship of Congregational Churches. Kendall introduced charismatic practices during his pastorate, while Greg Haslam continued this direction after 2002. The chapel also hosted major Christian conferences such as the Congregational Union’s May Meetings. Its architecture includes a nearly oval auditorium with two tiers of galleries and a large circular pulpit. Inside, the chapel’s interior features a high platform for Communion and a much larger preaching platform behind it. The organ, built by Henry Willis and restored in the 1920s, remains a centrepiece. Life Groups meet across London, and the chapel runs a foodbank as part of the Trussell Trust network. Sunday services at 11 am welcome visitors, and student retreats take place twice a year. The building itself is Grade II listed, recognised for its architectural significance.
