château de Bettancourt
The château de Bettancourt stands in the Marne countryside near the village of Bettancourt-la-Longue. Built in the 18th century by François Hériot, an officer in the Queen’s household, it replaced an earlier medieval manor belonging to the de Nettancourt family. The main building is a stone corps de logis with two wings and slate roofs, and a later chapel was added at the rear. A formal courtyard and a four-row tree-lined avenue once led to the entrance. The estate covered about sixteen hectares and included farm buildings and gardens bordered by the Chée stream. The château’s history includes a period as a First World War convalescent home run by Quakers under the comtesse de Morillot. After a fire in July 1940 it became an orphanage called Sainte-Marie. The marquise de Varagne’s death in 1879 had brought the property to the Morillot family, distant cousins who also owned nearby châteaux. A legal dispute over insurance after the fire reached the courts, where the Mutuelle de la Marne was ordered to pay over a million francs in damages. Politician Léon Morillot, born in 1838, once owned the estate. Today visitors see the surviving stone wings and chapel, still visible at the back of the building. The rear façade faces the garden and the Chée, while the front retains traces of the former tree-lined avenue. The outbuildings and parkland outline the edges of the old domain. The quiet setting offers long views across the Marne countryside, where the château once commanded the approach to Bettancourt-la-Longue.
