Museum Bad Rappenau

The Museum Bad Rappenau sits in the old Fränkischer Hof in the spa town of Bad Rappenau, a short drive north-east of Heilbronn. The building once housed a home for the town’s books as well as the museum when it reopened in 1989. A modern connecting wing and several cellars beneath the former dwelling now form the main exhibition spaces. Two-thirds of the displays trace the town’s salt-working and spa past, which shaped life here for about 150 years. Visitors see the tools used to sink brine wells, wooden pipe runs, and early drawings that record the changing saltworks. Scale models explain how the brine was pumped, while files and letters from the first years of the spa business add written detail. The remaining third shows finds from local archaeological digs, including animal bones, fragments of prehistoric pots, flint and hornblende tools, La Tène grave goods, and Roman villa relics dug up on Rappenauer land. A separate display in the 2008 extension at the Gradierwerk’s drill-house lets visitors follow the brine’s journey from deep underground to the open-air inhaling walls. Inside the main building, the cellars keep the cool, damp atmosphere once needed for storing salt and curing spa treatments.
