Abschnittsbefestigung Bürg

The Abschnittsbefestigung Bürg is an ancient earthwork fortification about 375 metres west-south-west of Reusch, a village in the market town of Kastl. It sits in gently rolling farmland typical of the Upper Palatinate. The site once formed a defensive wall but now only low grassy banks remain. Archaeologists classify it as a prehistoric and early historic earthwork, recorded by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Conservation. Its official monument number is D-3-6636-0019. Experts believe the fortification dates from the Bronze Age or Iron Age. The Oberpfalz region contains many such hilltop enclosures, yet Bürg is one of the clearer examples still visible. Research by Sixtus Lampl and Armin Stroh describes similar sites across the province. These works help place Bürg within a wider pattern of prehistoric settlement in southern Germany. The surviving walls are modest but give a sense of how communities once organised their defences. Visitors walk a quiet farm track to reach the low, rounded earthworks. The banks are covered in grass and wildflowers, with no modern structures on top. From the site there are wide views over patchwork fields and distant villages. The lack of crowds makes it a peaceful place to imagine Iron Age life. The earthworks themselves are subtle, best understood with a guidebook or local sign.
