Eastbrookend Country Park

Eastbrookend Country Park is an 84-hectare Local Nature Reserve in Dagenham, part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. It sits beside the River Rom and links to the Chase Nature Reserve, forming a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. Once derelict land, it was reshaped in the 1990s through large-scale earth-moving to create rolling meadows and wildflower grasslands. Over 50,000 young trees were planted across the site. A millennium centre and a fishing lake were added when the park opened in 1995. The Dagenham Road runs through the middle, dividing grazed wetlands from drier habitats. The park is worth visiting for its restored landscapes and wildlife. The wildflower meadows attract bees and butterflies, while the wetlands support waterfowl and wading birds. The fishing lake provides a quiet spot for anglers and birdwatchers. The mixture of wetland and dry ground creates varied habitats within a compact area. Its partnership with Chase Nature Reserve expands the area available for nature study and walks. The park shows how former industrial land can be transformed into valuable green space. Visitors find wide grassy slopes dotted with young trees and colourful wildflowers. A network of paths winds through the meadows and beside the lake. The millennium centre offers information and community events. Anglers line the lake’s edge, and families picnic on the slopes. The River Rom forms a natural boundary along one side, with wetland plants growing along its banks. The Dagenham Road divides the park but does not spoil its open feel. From any high point, the undulating landscape and scattered trees give a sense of space in the heart of east London.
