Burg Freyberg

Burg Freyberg stands on a 575-metre hill spur above the hamlet of Freyberg in Gutenzell-Hürbel. The spur juts out from the surrounding countryside, giving the site a commanding position. The castle was built by the Lords of Freyberg in 1237 and linked by family ties to the Lords of Hürbel. By 1520 the fortress had already been destroyed and left to decay. Today only the remains of the mound and the defensive ditch survive. The site is worth visiting for its clear traces of a once-powerful noble dynasty. The Lords of Freyberg played a notable role in the region’s medieval history. Their castle marked a key point on local trade and military routes. The visible earthworks and ditch show how the stronghold once defended the surrounding land. A visit lets people walk where those lords once stood. Visitors find a quiet hilltop with grass and low bushes. The remains of the mound rise gently above the ground. A shallow ditch runs across the approach, marking the old boundary. The view stretches over fields and woodland in every direction. The site is small but gives a sense of medieval power and loss.
