The Viehkogel is a mountain in the Steinernes Meer range of the Berchtesgaden Alps, straddling the border between Bavaria and Austria. It stands as an island peak on the high plateau, rising just high enough to give wide views across the surrounding stone sea. The summit offers clear sightlines in every direction, though higher ridges block views of sunrise and sunset. The Funtenseetauern hides the dawn while the ridge between Breithorn and Schindlköpfen conceals the dusk. The mountain’s modest height keeps distant ranges like the Hohe Tauern out of sight.

Climbing the Viehkogel usually starts at the Kärlingerhaus beside Funtensee. The marked path takes about one and a half to two hours to reach the top. Walkers need sure footing, for steep, slippery sections appear especially near the summit slopes. The route remains recognisable throughout, yet demands care and some scrambling. From the summit experienced mountaineers can descend straight to the Funtensee, avoiding the steepest walls by skirting left across grassy slopes and dwarf pine terrain.

At the top a broad stone platform gives a fine vantage point over the sea of limestone slabs. The panorama shows the plateau stretching away in all directions, broken only by scattered peaks and depressions. The Funtensee lies far below to the north, its dark waters framed by rugged walls. The path’s zigzag ascent and exposed final steps reward the climb with a quiet, open summit that feels remote despite its accessibility.
