Chesham Museum

Chesham Museum sits in Chesham Town Hall, in the heart of the Buckinghamshire town. The building itself is a Grade II listed structure, dating from the 17th century or earlier, and has long served as a civic landmark. The museum’s collection tells the story of Chesham and its surroundings through photographs, oral histories, and objects. It focuses on social, cultural, religious, and industrial heritage, with displays that reflect the town’s changing identity. The collection includes over 700 photographs, tools, manufactured goods, and documents spanning centuries. Volunteers have organised and preserved these items since the museum’s earliest days. The relocation to the town hall in 2024 marks a return to a central, accessible location after years of temporary homes. The museum’s origins trace back to 1981, when local historian Arnold Baines first proposed the idea. A decade of fundraising and temporary displays followed before the museum opened in 2004 in a stable block behind a pub. In 2009, it moved to larger premises in Market Square, where it remained until 2018. The current reopening in the town hall reflects a renewed commitment to serving the community. The museum’s permanent displays include ‘Made in Chesham’, which charts the town’s industrial past, and ‘Chesham at War’, which examines life during the two world wars. Other exhibits explore migration, archaeology, and local memories through oral histories. Visitors find five permanent galleries, each dedicated to a different theme. ‘Made in Chesham’ showcases tools and products from the town’s boot, brush, and brewing industries. ‘Chesham at War’ features gas masks, ration books, and wartime photographs. ‘Coming to Chesham’ tells the stories of those who settled in the town over time. ‘Digging up the Past’ presents archaeological finds, including a Bronze Age bowl from the Alps. Temporary exhibitions rotate twice a year, covering topics like housing, sports, and medieval history. The museum also hosts educational visits, town walks, and community events, making it a lively hub for local heritage.
