Pfarrkirche heiliger Ägydius, Schiefling (Bad St. Leonhard)

The parish church of St Ägidius stands at the western edge of Schiefling in the Lavant valley, a village grouped within the town of Bad St Leonhard. Built for the Catholic diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt, the church shares its site with a walled cemetery under Austrian heritage protection. The building combines a late-medieval core with later Baroque additions, giving it a layered appearance. The church’s exterior shows a tall west tower whose lower parts are Gothic but whose upper parts are Baroque, complete with round-headed sound-openings and a pointed roof. Inside, the nave is a single hall under a barrel vault divided into four bays by deep wall-pilasters and cross-vaulted ribs. Two wooden galleries, one above the other, span the west end, their lower one supported by plain piers. The furnishings date from the third quarter of the 18th century and include a richly carved high altar where St Ägidius is flanked by St Norbert and St Peter. A 17th-century stone font carries a Baroque wooden lid, and a canvas of the Adoration of the Shepherds hangs on one wall. The oldest bell in the tower bears the date 1779, marking the final phase of the church’s late-Baroque transformation.
