Titan

Titan is a natural cave near Castleton in the Derbyshire Peak District. It lies within the same mineral rake that formed Speedwell Cavern and Peak Cavern. The shaft was first revealed in 2006 after cavers found connections from James Hall Over Engine Mine to both Speedwell Cavern and Peak Cavern. The discovery followed an 18th-century account by James Plumtree, who described passages beyond the known Speedwell system. Early miners from Castleton families worked these passages, leaving marks on the walls that helped later explorers. The cave’s deepest shaft reaches 141.5 metres, making it Britain’s deepest. A team led by caver Dave Nixon, nicknamed Moose, found Leviathan first, a shaft altered by mining that is 79 metres deep. After clearing blockages and building a railway through boulder falls, they reached Peak Cavern’s Far Sump. From there they climbed to Titan, where echoes and a waterfall hinted at a vast shaft. The main shaft rises from a ledge 60 metres above the floor, with a domed roof reached after a six-day climb. Visitors cannot enter Titan directly, but an excavated access shaft from the surface leads to a bedding-plane passage near the top. The cave system totals over 18 kilometres in length. Miners’ relics remain in situ in Leviathan, and early mining families like the Halls once ran the George Hotel in Castleton. The cave’s West Passage remains blocked by a dangerous boulder choke high above the floor. Digging continues to extend the system further.
