Whitby Museum

Whitby Museum stands in Pannett Park, a green space in the heart of Whitby, North Yorkshire. The building opened in 1931 to house collections gathered by the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society since 1823. The same site also contains the Society’s Library and Archive, linking past and present research. The museum’s holdings cover local history, Jurassic fossils, Whitby jet, Captain James Cook, and the town’s whaling past. There are also costumes, textiles, photographs by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, and a reference library for social and industrial research. Among the curiosities is a Hand of Glory, a preserved hand once said to possess magical powers. The museum’s specialist collections include ammonites and marine reptiles from the Jurassic coast. It holds items connected to Captain James Cook and his ship Endeavour, as well as artefacts from Whitby’s whaling industry. The costume and textiles section displays clothing from past centuries, while the photography collection preserves images of North Yorkshire life. The reference library and archive document the town’s industries and social changes over time. A notable former exhibit was an Egyptian mummy dating from around 300 BC, once owned by Sir George Elliot and curated by Thomas Sheppard. Visitors find rooms filled with fossils, jet jewellery, whaling tools, and photographs of Victorian Whitby. The Hand of Glory sits alongside costumes and textiles in glass cases. The reference library offers quiet study space for those researching local history. Outside, Pannett Park provides a peaceful setting for a stroll after exploring the museum. The building itself reflects the town’s long tradition of collecting and learning.
