TU Wien

The Technische Universität Wien stands on a broad campus in Vienna’s ninth district, a short tram ride north of the city centre. Founded in 1815 as the Imperial-Royal Polytechnic Institute, it grew from a single building into a modern university of eight faculties. The main library, completed in 1987, holds six floors of open shelves and reading desks, its design by Justus Dahinden and partners softened by owl sculptures from Swiss artist Bruno Weber. The university is recognised for research that spans quantum physics, energy systems and computational science. Its computer science department appears in the top one hundred worldwide, while the physics faculty includes Nobel laureate Ferenc Krausz. Past teachers include Christian Doppler, inventor of the Doppler effect, and Viktor Kaplan, designer of the Kaplan turbine. The library alone houses around seven hundred study places, showing how teaching and research remain closely linked. Visitors find wide corridors lined with technical drawings and glass-walled seminar rooms. The main library offers quiet study spaces on every floor, with natural light filtering through large windows. Outside, tram lines run past lecture halls where engineers and architects once studied. The campus still carries the imprint of early rectors such as Johann Joseph von Prechtl, whose portrait hangs in the entrance hall.
