Linz-East airfield
The Flugplatz Linz-Ost sits beside the Danube in Linz’s eastern industrial district, 3.5 kilometres from the city centre. It occupies the west bank of the river, where the airfield’s single grass runway runs north–south parallel to the water. The site is run by a local flying club, handling mainly gliders and motor gliders under strict operating rules. Only motor aircraft with special permission may take off or land here, while visiting pilots need prior approval from the airfield manager. Gliders launch by winch or tow-plane, keeping noise low over the nearby harbour and factories. The runway measures 940 metres, short enough to discourage heavy traffic yet long enough for most light aircraft. Visitors find open grass strips bordered by warehouses and cranes, with the river just metres away. No terminal buildings exist, just a small clubhouse where pilots gather. The flat riverside setting offers long views along the Danube and back towards Linz’s skyline.
