St Mary's Church, Saltford

St Mary’s Church stands in the Somerset village of Saltford, its walls rising above the lanes where it has watched over the community for more than a thousand years. The building began in the 12th century, though parts may be older, and it carries Grade II listing for its historic importance. A Norman font still receives babies at christenings, a relic rescued from a wartime cattle trough after the Battle of Lansdown. The tower, possibly Saxon, has been raised by ten feet and repaired many times since. Three bells were cast in 1820, yet only one survives and still rings today. The church’s life is woven into the village through its rector and the groups that meet inside. The Reverend Daile Wilshere now leads the parish after The Reverend G. Richard W. Hall served from 1988 to 2014. A children’s choir practises regularly and sings at Parish Communion, while the rector visits the nearby Saltford Church of England Primary School every Monday. The church hall, once the village school, offers a large hall and smaller rooms for hire, with income supporting the church’s work. Inside, the 19th-century gallery holds the organ above the porch, and a recent memorial window honours the choirmaster, Mr T.C.G. Ewins, who served for a decade. The building belongs to a wider family of parishes that includes All Saints in Corston and Holy Trinity in Newton St Loe, all under the Diocese of Bath & Wells. Beyond its walls, the church keeps close ties with local schools and community groups, keeping the ancient stones alive with daily life.
