Gölbner

Gölbner is a mountain in the Austrian federal state of Tyrol. It stands in the Lienz district, in the central part of the country. The peak rises 2,943 metres above sea level, making it a prominent feature of the surrounding landscape. The nearest large settlement is Matrei in Osttirol, nineteen and a half kilometres to the north. The terrain around the mountain is mostly rugged, though the immediate slopes are less steep. The area is mainly covered by mixed forest, with spruce and pine dominating the lower slopes. Population density is low, averaging twenty-six people per square kilometre. The isolation and natural setting attract those who prefer quiet, undeveloped places. The mountain’s height and position give it wide views over the Hohe Tauern range. Visitors find a quiet alpine environment with few man-made structures. The forests provide shelter for chamois and red deer. Above the treeline, open meadows appear in summer, dotted with alpine flowers. The air is clear, and the only sounds are wind, water and birdsong. The mountain offers a place to walk without crowds, where the only footprints may be one’s own.
