Danmarks Nationalbank

Danmarks Nationalbank stands in Copenhagen’s Slotsholmen district, a low island of cobbled streets and waterfront walks. Its present headquarters is a heavy, copper-clad block designed in the 1960s by Arne Jacobsen with Hans Dissing and Otto Weitling. The building replaced an 1870 neo-Renaissance palace by Johan Daniel Herholdt, itself built on the site of an 18th-century house by Caspar Frederik Harsdorff. Inside, Jacobsen’s interiors still carry his signature details—brushed aluminium, teak panelling, and integrated lighting. The bank is Denmark’s central monetary authority, issuing the krone and managing government debt under a 19th-century charter. It has been fully independent since 1936 and represents Denmark in the European System of Central Banks. The Board of Governors, led by a royal appointee, sets policy without government interference. The bank also once printed all Danish and Faroese notes at its own works until outsourcing in 2016. Visitors approach the copper façade through a broad plaza of granite setts. Inside, the main hall rises two storeys under a grid of skylights, with Jacobsen’s original counters and signage still in place. Beyond the public areas, the building houses secure vaults and meeting rooms lined with teak and leather. From the waterfront side, the low copper volume reflects the changing light over the canal, while Slotsholmen’s older institutions—parliament, archive, and royal library—stand nearby.
