Ringwall auf dem Gehrdener Berg

The Ringwall on Gehrdener Berg is an ancient earthwork near Gehrden, about 15 kilometres southwest of Hannover. It crowns the densely wooded summit of the Burgberg, which rises to 155 metres above sea level. The oval enclosure measures roughly 140 metres by 75 metres and covers about one hectare, with a broad rampart and deep ditch still visible on the gentler slopes. The rampart is up to six metres wide and two metres high on the outside, while the inner face is only about 1.2 metres high. A steep northern slope provided natural defence, so the rampart is interrupted there. Archaeologists have long debated its age and purpose. Early 20th-century excavations led by Karl Hermann Jacob-Friesen uncovered a six-metre-wide rampart and a four-metre-deep rock-cut ditch. Later work in 2013, a joint project of the Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum Hannover and the Freie Universität Berlin, found two distinct soil layers suggesting the wall was built in two phases. Roman silver coins discovered nearby point to activity around the time of Christ, yet no single artefact securely dates the site. Theories once linked it to the Cherusci tribe or to Charlemagne’s Saxon wars, but these are no longer accepted. Visitors walk a forested path to the summit and follow the surviving rampart and ditch around the oval enclosure. Remains of the Burgberg Tower, built in 1897–98, stand at the centre, its viewing platform once popular with day-trippers from Hannover. Stone information panels from the 1930s Cherusker trail still explain the site, and a modern panel describes its troubled interpretation in the Nazi era. From the crest there are wide views across the surrounding countryside and along the old east–west Hellweg route.
