St John the Evangelist's Church, Gressingham

St John the Evangelist’s Church stands in the quiet village of Gressingham, Lancashire, a Grade I listed building with parts dating from the 12th century. The church sits on a small rise above the River Lune, its sandstone walls and stone-slate roof blending with the surrounding fields. A three-stage west tower, rebuilt in 1734, rises above the nave, while a north aisle and chancel extend the building to the east. The south wall shows a Norman doorway with chevron and ropework carving, evidence of the church’s long history. Inside, box pews and a 1714 pulpit remain from earlier centuries, alongside later restorations by E. G. Paley in 1862. The church is worth visiting for its layered history and well-preserved features. Parts of the structure survive from the 12th century, while later rebuilds and restorations add layers from the 18th and 19th centuries. The 1862 restoration by Paley included new windows, a tiled chancel, and the removal of the porch, all recorded in detail. Two stained-glass windows by Morris & Co. add colour to the interior, and Anglo-Saxon carvings are built into the walls. The churchyard holds war graves of a World War I soldier and a World War II officer, marking its place in modern history. Inside, the nave arcade divides the space into bays, with a chapel to the north containing a tomb chest for George Marton. The chancel arch and east window, added in 1862, frame the altar area, while the clerestory windows above the nave bring in light. The Norman doorway on the south side offers a glimpse of the church’s earliest entrance. Outside, the churchyard is bordered by mature trees, and the view across the fields towards the river completes the scene.
