Burgruine Altrosegg
The Burgruine Rosegg stands on a hill above the Rosental valley in Carinthia. Built in the 12th or early 13th century, it was enlarged until the early 19th century before falling into ruin. Today the remains lie within the Tierpark Rosegg, protected as a listed monument. The castle belonged to the Lords of Ras, an influential Carinthian noble family, whose seat moved here from earlier strongholds. After their line died out in 1318, the fortress passed through several noble houses, including the Walsee, Pettauer and Orsini-Rosenberg families. Repairs were made in 1632 and after a fire before 1688, yet stones were later taken for a nearby church tower and a protective wall during the Napoleonic wars. Visitors find the northern side still shows parts of the Romanesque keep and sections of the outer curtain wall. The hilltop offers views across the Rosental, while the surrounding Tierpark Rosegg provides a peaceful setting for a walk among the ruins.
