Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf
The Stadtmuseum stands in Düsseldorf’s Carlstadt district, just south of the old town centre. It occupies the Palais Spee, a historic building that has housed the city’s collections since the 1960s. The museum traces Düsseldorf’s development from its early days as a trading post to a modern capital. The museum began in 1874 when the city received a gift of oil paintings from the estate of Count von Stutterheim. Prinz Georg von Preußen later expanded the collection with portraits and other works. After wartime destruction, the museum reopened in new quarters and steadily added departments on shipping, theatre, carnival and military life. Visitors find rooms arranged around the Palais Spee’s elegant courtyard. Displays cover everything from medieval maps to 19th-century furniture. A recent renovation added a modern wing that links the old building to the city’s archives. The museum’s shipbuilding section recalls Düsseldorf’s long ties to the Rhine.
