Burg Stallegg

Burg Stallegg stands as a ruined hilltop fortress at 776 metres above sea level near Göschweiler, a district of Löffingen in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. The site overlooks the narrow Wutach valley and the Stallegger Bridge, which now carries the road over the river. A single curtain wall is all that remains of the medieval stronghold built by the knights of Stallegg. The family first appears in records around 1250 and held the castle until the late 14th century. Later owners included the lords of Blumberg, Almshofen, Bern and Reckenbach before the counts of Fürstenberg took control in the 16th century. The ruins sit on a steep slope above the Wutachschlucht, a deep gorge carved by the river. A nearby ford once crossed the Wutach at this point and the castle was probably built to protect it. The Stallegger Bridge now spans the gorge, linking the old route to the surviving Hofgut Stallegg farmstead. A small hydro-electric plant, the Flusskraftwerk Stallegg, operates close by, drawing water from the river. Visitors reach the site along a quiet path that climbs from the valley road. The remaining masonry offers a clear view down into the gorge and across to the opposite slopes. The setting is quiet and rural, with meadows and woodland surrounding the ruins. The nearest settlement is Göschweiler, where a few houses and a church stand beside the valley road. The contrast between the crumbling stonework and the rushing river below makes the place memorable.
