Tipi am Kanzleramt

The Tipi am Kanzleramt is a theatre in Berlin’s Tiergarten district. Its round, tent-like shape gives it the name Tipi, and it stands between the Federal Chancellery and the House of the World’s Cultures. Up to 550 seats fill the single auditorium, making it Europe’s largest permanent tent stage. Shows range from chanson and cabaret to concerts, musicals and variety acts. The tent was set up in 2002 to mark the tenth birthday of the Bar jeder Vernunft. The programme draws well-known names alongside emerging artists. Georgette Dee, Tim Fischer, Dominique Horwitz and Gayle Tufts have all appeared there. International acts such as the Russian circus Semianyki and the Australian beatbox crew TomTomCrew had their first German performances at the Tipi. Since 2010 the touring production of Cabaret, directed by Vincent Paterson, has regularly taken residence. The tent’s founder and director Holger Klotzbach shaped its identity from the start. Inside, the eight-metre ceiling allows for elaborate staging and lighting. The programme changes frequently, reflecting the tastes of both the public and the artists. The tent’s location in central Berlin, close to government buildings, makes it easy to reach after work or before an evening out. Its uncluttered programme and straightforward setting keep the focus on the performance itself.
