Pfarrkirche hl. Johannes der Täufer, Höbersdorf

The parish church of Höbersdorf stands at the top of the rising village street in the eastern part of Höbersdorf, a village in the municipality of Sierndorf in Lower Austria. It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and belongs to the deanery of Stockerau within the Archdiocese of Vienna. The church is protected as a listed monument. The present late-baroque building was completed in 1801 after an earlier parish mentioned in 1429 had lapsed and been refounded in 1784. Its exterior is a long, half-circular-ended hall with round-arched windows and pilaster strips, and small side chapels. The west tower is framed by the same pilasters, rises to a volute gable, and is capped by an onion dome. The main door is dated 1801 in the late-baroque style. Inside, a continuous five-bay barrel-vaulted nave leads to a shallow apse decorated with stucco roundels on ribs. In the west bay an organ loft on Tuscan columns carries a balustrade. The fourth bay on the north side opens through a chamfered pointed arch into a small side chapel, a remnant of the earlier church. The high altar is a pink-marble retable with a curved gable, topped by a statue of the patron saint from the mid-19th century. The side-altar retable and the organ case, with its tiered prospect and Brustpositiv, also date from the early 19th century; the organ’s pipework was installed by the Rieger brothers in 1911.
