Ardnamurchan

Ardnamurchan is a remote peninsula in the Scottish Highlands, stretching 130 square kilometres where the Atlantic meets the mainland’s edge. Its single-track road winds through empty glens and past scattered crofts, ending at Ardnamurchan Point. The land rises to Ben Hiant, a grassy hill that offers wide views over the sea and islands. The peninsula’s remoteness is part of its appeal, with few visitors and a quiet pace of life. Corrachadh Mòr, a kilometre south of the lighthouse, marks the true westernmost point of Great Britain. The geology here is striking, with ancient volcanic rings visible on maps and in satellite images. The area has deep historical layers, from St Columba’s 6th-century visits recorded by Adomnan of Iona to Viking ship burials uncovered in the 21st century. Artefacts found at Cul na Croise suggest battles fought in the 13th and 14th centuries between rival clans and Edward I’s forces. The Clan MacDonald ruled here for centuries until the Campbells took control in the 17th century. The Highland Clearances in the early 19th century destroyed villages like Bourblaige, leaving only stone foundations. Gaelic culture remains strong, with nearly one in five locals speaking the language and an annual Mòd festival celebrating its music and poetry. Visitors find a landscape of raw beauty, where golden and white-tailed eagles circle above pine forests and wild moorland. The Ardnamurchan Lighthouse stands on a sheer rock face, its beam guiding ships past the peninsula’s jagged headlands. Small villages like Kilchoan and Salen have whitewashed cottages and harbours where boats bob in calm bays. The Ardnamurchan Distillery offers a taste of local whisky, while shinty matches draw crowds in season. The peninsula’s unspoiled shores and hills provide walking paths with views of Mull, Coll and the Small Isles on clear days.
