St Edmund's Church, Southwold

St Edmund’s Church stands in the Suffolk town of Southwold, a place once known for fishing that grew into a busy port by the 15th century. Built between the 1430s and 1490s, it replaced a smaller church destroyed by fire and now shelters one of Suffolk’s finest interiors under a single great roof. The tower is famous for its East Anglian flushwork, where flints form patterns and crowned letters spell out a prayer to St Edmund. A copper roof once topped the building, topped by a slender spirelet added in 1948, though the church now wears a new lead covering. During the Second World War a German bomb fell nearby, blowing out windows and sparing the church only by a narrow margin. The church’s rood screen stretches across the chancel arch and is regarded as the finest in the county, while a 15th-century clock jack at the west end strikes the hours with axe and bell. The font cover remains impressive despite damage to the bowl, and a 1971 engraved window shows St Edmund at his martyrdom. The tower holds eight bells, some dating back to the 16th century, and the ringers climb fifty-two steps to reach their chamber. The organ, built in 1887 and rebuilt in 1966, still follows a specification drawn up by a professor of music at Oxford. Visitors step into a lofty nave where the roof soars above the tower, giving an open sense of space. The east window by Sir Ninian Comper and the west window below the tower contain the only stained glass, most medieval glass having been lost long ago. The churchyard leads to St Edmund’s Hall, rebuilt after wartime destruction, where the modern congregation gathers. From the tower flagpole the view stretches over Southwold’s rooftops to the sea, while inside the rood screen and clock jack recall centuries of craftsmanship.
