Schneealpe

The Schneealpe is a limestone massif in the Northern Limestone Alps, straddling the border between Styria and Lower Austria. Its highest point is the Windberg at 1,903 metres, with other notable peaks including the Ameisbühel, Schönhaltereck and Donnerwand. The surrounding valleys include Hinternaßwald, Altenberg an der Rax, Kapellen, Neuberg an der Mürz, Mürzsteg and Frein an der Mürz. Dense forests cover much of the lower slopes, while the higher areas remain largely uninhabited. The area is home to several mountain huts, including the Schneealpen House and the Hinteralm House, both situated on the high plateau at around 1,780 metres. The Kalte Mürz rises in the northern part of the massif, feeding into the wider river system. The Schneealpe also plays a key role in Vienna’s water supply, as part of the catchment area for the First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline. Water is conveyed through the Schneealpen Tunnel, built in the 1960s to transport drinking water to Hinternaßwald. Visitors to the Schneealpe can explore well-marked paths across the plateau and surrounding peaks. The Schneealpen House and other huts provide rest stops with basic facilities, while the rugged landscape offers panoramic views of the Northern Limestone Alps. The contrast between forested lower slopes and open highland creates a varied hiking experience. The area is popular with walkers seeking both gentle trails and more challenging climbs. The presence of the Kalte Mürz and its tributaries adds to the natural appeal of the region.
