Kreuzkofel

The Kreuzkofel is a mountain in the Lienzer Dolomites of Austria. It stands south-west of the Spitzkofel, with the Drau river flowing north of its slopes and the Gail valley and Gail river to the south. Geographers place it within the Gailtaler Alps rather than the Dolomites proper. For decades the massif of which it forms part was thought to be the highest point in the Gailtaler Alps, until new measurements gave the title to the Große Sandspitze. The Kreuzkofel itself remains a striking summit, linked to the Spitzkofel by a narrow ridge. Walkers who reach the top find wide views over the Lienzer Dolomites and the Gail valley below. The climb is steep in places, but the route is well marked and rewards effort with sweeping alpine scenery. On clear days the Hohe Tauern range appears in the distance. The contrast between the limestone peaks and the green valley floor makes the effort worthwhile.
