Mönchswalder Berg

The Mönchswalder Berg is a hill in the Lusatian Highlands, about three kilometres north of Wilthen in Saxony’s Bautzen district. It belongs to the same range as the Valtenberg and the Czorneboh. The landscape is gently rolling, covered with forests and meadows. A narrow road winds up the slope to the summit. The hill stands 449 metres above sea level, making it one of the higher points in the region. From the top of the viewing tower visitors can see far across the countryside. To the north the land is flat, revealing the city of Bautzen, the Bautzen Reservoir and the Boxberg Power-plant. On clear days the smokestacks of Schwarze Pumpe appear on the horizon. To the south the Valtenberg and the Ungerberg with its own observation tower are visible. Peaks from Saxon Switzerland such as the Big and Small Zschirnstein rise in the distance. To the west the Picho with its antenna tower stands out. To the east the Czorneboh, Hochstein, Bieleboh, Lausche, Tannenberg and Jeschken form a line of hills. Under calm weather conditions the Jizera and Giant Mountains can also be seen. The view changes with the seasons, from green forests in summer to misty ridges in winter.
