Kuehndorf Castle

The Johanniterburg Kühndorf is a medieval hilltop castle in the village of Kühndorf, seven kilometres east of Meiningen in southern Thuringia. It stands on the northern edge of the village at the foot of the Dolmar hill, with the wider countryside stretching towards the Thuringian Forest. The site has been fortified since Celtic times, long before the first written mention of the village in 795. The castle’s unusual history begins in 1315 when the Knights Hospitaller, a religious military order, built a new stronghold on the ruins of an earlier Henneberg fortress. The order’s only surviving German castle, it was designed as a rectangular enclosure with two broad residential towers. After passing through several noble families, including the Henneberg counts who turned it into a residence, it fell into quiet use under the Saxon dukes from the late 16th century. Visitors today find a late-Gothic castle with a five-tower outer curtain wall added in the 15th century. The inner courtyard preserves medieval stonework, including the stump of the original bergfried and carved spolia from the 13th century. Inside, the former great hall and chapel show the division between secular and monastic life marked by a 14th-century heraldic stone. Guided tours and occasional costumed events bring the site to life, while the surrounding hills offer views across the Thuringian countryside.
