Schaumburg Castle, Lower Saxony

Schaumburg Castle stands on a hill above the Weser valley near Rinteln in Lower Saxony. The stone fortress dates back to the Middle Ages and once belonged to the counts of Schaumburg. It later became the seat of the princes of Schaumburg-Lippe who ruled the small state for centuries. The castle’s white walls and round towers rise above the surrounding woodland, giving long views over the river and countryside. The building is still owned by the princely family, though recent changes in ownership have taken place. The castle is worth the journey for its long history and the role it played in German royalty. In 1866 it passed to the Hohenzollerns after the prince sided with Austria in war. In 1907 Emperor Wilhelm II returned it as a gift to mark a royal anniversary and reward loyalty. The castle remained in the family until 2022, when it was bought by a Dutch entrepreneur and his wife, a German princess. These events show how the castle linked politics, war and royal life for more than a hundred years. Visitors find a medieval stronghold with later additions from the 19th century. Inside, rooms still contain furniture and art collected by the princes over generations. Outside, paths wind through the castle grounds and along the ramparts. The main tower offers a wide outlook over the Weser valley and the rolling hills beyond. The site also hosts small exhibitions about local history and the castle’s royal owners. From the terrace, the view stretches for many kilometres across the landscape.
