Comödie Dresden

The Comödie Dresden is a boulevard theatre in the Saxon capital. It opened in 1996 in the World Trade Center and seats about 640 people, making it the largest private theatre in the state. The house was founded by actor and director Jürgen Wölffer and first staged Dr med Hiob Prätorius on 5 September 1996 under Gerd Schlesselmann’s artistic leadership. After insolvency and a change of management in 2011 the name reverted to the historic spelling ‘Comödie’. Since 2012 Christian Kühn has led the theatre, steadily increasing attendance to around 160 000 visitors in recent years. Recent hits include Go Trabi Go, Wilhelm Hauff’s Das Wirtshaus im Spessart and Die Feuerzangenbowle with Volker Zack. The theatre’s average capacity reached about 75 per cent in 2024. Inside the World Trade Center the auditorium presents boulevard plays, farces, adaptations and musical comedies. Outside, during summer months, the baroque Schloss Übigau hosts the Comödie im Schloss with open-air performances. Past productions there have included The Wirtshaus im Spessart and The Addams Family, drawing thousands of spectators. The company also hosts cabaret, concerts and readings, welcoming guests such as Bernd Stelter, Ingo Appelt and Thomas Stelzer.
