Castell Caer Wedros

A small medieval earthwork stands near Llwyndafydd in Ceredigion. Known as Castell Caer Wedros, it lacks the usual surrounding defensive wall called a bailey. Built between the late 11th and the second half of the 12th century, it was constructed from earth and stone with a ditch around it. The Normans introduced this style of fortification to Britain after bringing it from France. Welsh people later adopted the same technique for their own defences. Cadw has listed the site and given it the reference number CD087. It belongs to a larger group of similar earthworks found mostly along the Welsh border. These include areas now within Shropshire, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Powys and Flintshire. The landscape around the site remains rural and quiet.
