Seetal Alps

The Seetal Alps rise in the Austrian state of Styria south of the Mur valley. This mountain range forms part of the Lavanttal Alps and stretches between Scheifling and Zeltweg. Its highest point is the Zirbitzkogel at 2,396 metres. The peaks include the Kreiskogel, Scharfes Eck and Fuchskogel, each rising above the tree line. The range is bounded by the Mur valley to the north and the Klippitztörl pass to the south. The Obdach Saddle marks its eastern edge while the Neumarkt Saddle lies to the west. Climbers and walkers come here for the rugged rock formations and long-distance paths. The Eisenwurzenweg, a long-distance trail, reaches its highest point at the Zirbitzkogel. Ski areas operate near the Klippitztörl, Sabathy Hut and Tonner Hut. The Seetaler Alpe military training area lies on the northern slopes and is accessible from Judenburg. These features make the range a centre for outdoor activity in the region. Visitors find several mountain huts scattered across the slopes. The Zirbitzkogel House stands on the summit at 2,376 metres. Lower down are the Tonner Hut, Waldheim Hut and Alpengasthof Sabathy. The Winterleiten Hut and St. Martin’s Hut sit on the eastern and northern flanks. The Klippitztörl Hut overlooks the ski area near the pass. These huts provide rest and shelter for those exploring the peaks and valleys.
