St Mary's Church, Wythall

St Mary’s Church stands in the village of Wythall, Worcestershire, as a redundant Grade II listed parish church. Built in 1862 by Frederick Preedy, it was enlarged in 1908 when William Bidlake added the landmark tower. The font came from Immanuel Church in Birmingham after it was demolished in the 1960s. Worship ended here in 1986, and the building now belongs to an electrical firm. Since 2014 the congregation gathers at the new church on Shawhurst Lane in Hollywood. The church holds a 1908 Nicholson & Co organ, still in place today. Its churchyard holds eight war graves of Commonwealth service personnel from the Second World War. The tower and its details remain a local landmark. The building’s simple Gothic style reflects Preedy’s design. Changes over the decades show how the church served the community. Inside, the nave and chancel keep their original proportions. The 1908 tower rises above the west end, visible from nearby lanes. The font from Birmingham sits near the entrance. Outside, gravestones mark the war graves in neat rows. The churchyard’s quiet grass and mature trees frame the old building.
