Pfarrkirche Sankt Ägydius Hollenegg

The parish church of Hollenegg stands in the second courtyard of Hollenegg Castle in the village of Hollenegg, part of Bad Schwanberg in southern Styria. It is dedicated to Saint Giles and has been under Denkmalschutz since the 19th century. The building occupies a central position within the castle grounds, surrounded by the old walls and outbuildings of the estate. The church’s history begins in 1165, with the first parish record dating from 1445. The present structure was rebuilt under master builder Johann Fuchs and consecrated in 1778. Inside, the elliptical nave is framed by four niches between projecting wall piers, while the rectangular choir lies to the south and the tower with its two square annexes to the north. Outside, visitors can see four Renaissance tombstones of the Lords of Hollenegg and their wives, carved from red marble in the early 16th century. Inside, the fittings are in the Rococo style, including side-altar paintings signed by Philipp Carl Laubmann in 1753. Along the west arcade hang heraldic funeral shields with finely carved reliefs, accompanied by a white-grey marble tomb slab. The church’s bells include three new bronze castings from 2022, donated by Alfred and Alice von und zu Liechtenstein and dedicated to their children. An organ by Matthäus Mauracher the Younger, installed in 1891, completes the interior.
