Pfarrkirche Aggsbach Markt

The Pfarrkirche Aggsbach Markt stands on a gentle rise at the western edge of the village in Lower Austria. It is a three-aisled late-Romanesque pillar basilica with a Gothic vault, a west tower and a Baroqueised choir. The church and its adjoining cemetery are protected as a listed monument.
The building’s history begins with a church recorded in 1148, but the present structure was erected between 1286 and 1300 by Rueger von Zaucha. From the 15th to the 18th century it served as a pilgrimage church, and the parish itself was founded in 1632. The Baroque high altar of about 1780 holds statues of Saints Joachim, Anna and Mary, while the left side altar carries a Baroque crucifix from the third quarter of the 18th century.
Inside, the nave’s three bays are covered by ribbed vaults on polygonal piers, and the side aisles open through low, deep arcades. The west gallery, added in the late 18th century, spans the full width of the central nave. The choir is a single bay with a five-sided apse and ribbed vaulting. Notable furnishings include a late-15th-century crucifixion relief on one bell, a late-medieval offertory box, and a 17th-century holy-water basin.
