Buckland Rings

Buckland Rings is an Iron Age hill fort near Lymington in Hampshire. It sits on a low gravel spur only 27 metres above sea level, enclosing 2.8 hectares with triple banks and double ditches. The innermost bank rises 2.4 metres, while the middle bank is unusually wide. The fort’s entrance lies on the east side, where a long passage once led to massive gateposts. Part of the eastern ramparts were levelled in the 18th century, and the outer bank on the west side is partly buried beneath a road. Hampshire County Council bought the site in 1989 to protect it for public access. Early reports from the 18th century describe Buckland Rings as a strong defensive work with double ditches and triple ramparts. Thomas Wright visited in 1743 and drew a plan before some defences were lost to ploughing. Later writers linked the site to Ambrosius Aurelianus, a 5th-century war leader, though modern archaeologists date it earlier. Excavations in 1935 by Christopher Hawkes uncovered timber-reinforced ramparts and a 60-metre entrance passage. Finds included Iron Age pottery, a bronze horn-cap, and an iron chain, suggesting a first-century BC date. Visitors today see well-preserved earthworks with clear banks and ditches, though some sections are damaged. The entrance passage and gatepost holes remain visible, showing how the fort was defended. A bicycle dirt-jump track runs beside the gravel pit near the west end, while Ampress Camp lies 360 metres to the east. The site is quiet, with only the distant road and nearby houses reminding of modern encroachment. Hampshire County Council maintains it as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, open for walking. The low hilltop offers views over the surrounding countryside, where the old defences still shape the landscape.
