Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art Gallery

Maidstone Museum stands in the heart of Maidstone, Kent, within a Grade II* listed Elizabethan manor house completed in 1577. The building began as Chillington Manor and later became the Charles Museum in 1858 after Thomas Charles, a local doctor, bequeathed his art and antiquities to the town. The museum expanded over the centuries with new wings, including the Bentlif Art Gallery in 1889, funded by Samuel Bentlif to display his brother George’s art collection. Another addition, the Victoria Gallery, was built between 1897 and 1899 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The museum now houses one of the largest mixed collections in the county and is run by Maidstone Borough Council. The museum’s collections are of international significance, with over 600,000 artefacts spanning fine art, natural history, and human history. Three collections stand out: the Anglo-Saxon artefacts, one of the best from Britain’s richest region; the Japanese collection, among the largest outside London; and the Brenchley Collection, amassed by explorer Julius Brenchley. The human history section includes Egyptian mummies, Napoleonic relics, and the Lambeth Bible’s second volume. The fine art holdings feature works by Albert Goodwin and James Jefferys, while the natural history section contains half a million specimens, including rare minerals and British flora. Visitors explore rooms filled with centuries-old furniture, ceramics, and costumes, alongside galleries dedicated to natural history and ethnography. The Bentlif Art Gallery displays European and Chinese ceramics, Japanese sword fittings, and Edo-period woodblock prints. The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment Museum, housed within since 1964, adds military history to the visit. The Elizabethan manor’s Tudor core and later extensions create a layered setting for these diverse collections.
