Schloss Schwanberg

Schloss Schwanberg stands in the market town of Bad Schwanberg in the Deutschlandsberg district of Styria. The building is protected as a historic monument. A castle was first built here around 1200, and later rebuilt in 1581 by Wilhelm von Galler. The castle chapel was consecrated in 1778, and since 1891 the building has belonged to the Styrian regional government. After serving as a care home for many years, it was sold in 2021 to a property development company. The castle is a nearly trapezoidal four-sided structure with a distinctive courtyard surrounded by arcaded columns on all four sides. Inside, visitors can see richly decorated ceilings from the early 18th and late 18th centuries. A stone fountain with a balustrade dates from the early 1700s. The castle chapel contains a Baroque altar and a painting of the Annunciation restored in 1977. A granite obelisk was erected in 2006 to commemorate victims of the Nazi-era killings of patients from the care home. The building also bears witness to difficult moments in the 20th century, including a scandal in 2010 that led to legal action against staff. The castle’s architecture and history make it a place where past and present meet.
