Burg Rockenberg

Burg Rockenberg stands on a small rocky outcrop at the edge of Rockenberg’s old village centre in the Wetteraukreis, Hesse. Built as a medieval hilltop fortress, its surviving walls and towers still rise above the surrounding rooftops. The rectangular enclosure once had four round towers, three of which remain visible today. A free-standing third tower stands opposite the main group, while the central courtyard holds a tall palas-like great hall. The whole site commands wide views over the Wetterau plain. The fortress was begun in the early 14th century, with dendrochronology dating its main residential tower to 1317. It passed through several noble families before becoming a storage barn and later a granary. In the 18th century the east wall was removed to make way for the ‘Red House’, a Baroque administration building for the Mainz Electorate. After changing hands in the 19th century, it served briefly as a distillery and then as a farmstead. Today the surviving masonry forms a quiet public space for the village. The great hall hosts council meetings and wedding ceremonies, while the former granary serves as a café. An annual reading competition for local schoolchildren takes place in the courtyard. The ‘Red House’ now operates as a restaurant, its warm stone walls contrasting with the older grey ruins. Visitors walk between the towers and along the high curtain walls, tracing the outline of a once-mighty stronghold now woven into the daily life of Rockenberg.
