Wohn- und Geschäftshaus

The Zehnthof stands in the heart of Volkach, a small town in Lower Franconia, directly opposite the parish church of St Bartholomäus. Its position on the main street makes it one of the most noticeable buildings in the town centre. The house has two storeys under a pitched roof and a gabled front with volutes. A side passage leads through a carriageway into the courtyard behind. Between the 16th and 17th centuries this was where Würzburg’s prince-bishops stayed when they visited. From 1545 it was converted into an administrative building, and a window frame in the rear wing still shows the style of that period. Later it became the royal Bavarian revenue office, and in 1929 Volkach’s police station opened here. A thorough renovation in 1974 turned the grand house into shops and flats while keeping its historic character. Inside the courtyard visitors see the old Renaissance structure with its ornate gable and side archway. The building is listed by the Bavarian heritage office and forms part of the protected old-town ensemble. Archaeologists have found medieval remains beneath the surrounding streets, adding to the sense of layered history in this corner of the town.
