Loch Sween

Loch Sween is a sea loch in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It lies near Lochgilphead with Castle Sween on its southern shore. The village of Tayvallich sits at the head of Loch a' Bhealaich on the northern side. The loch’s shape is complex, with several inlets branching off its inner eastern end. Caol Scotnish stretches far north and east, while Loch Craiglin is a small bridged embayment nearby. Linne Mhuirich is a long narrow inlet halfway down the loch on the north side. Ceann an t-Sàilein lies between the Island of Danna and the main loch at the western end. The loch contains many islands, including Eilean à Chapuill and Eilean nan Uan near Danna. Ulva Islands and Taynish Island lie farther east on the northern shore. On the southern side are Cala and Eilean Loain, with tidal Eilean Mhartan beyond them. The Fairy Islands include Eilean a' Bhrein, while Eilean na Circe holds the ruins of a fortified dwelling in Caol Scotnish. The inner loch has maerl beds and burrowed mud, supporting a colony of volcano worm. The sea bed at the loch’s mouth consists of coarser sediments, and it is home to one of Scotland’s most important native oyster populations. Loch Sween was designated a Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area in 2014. It is considered a Category IV protected area by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The loch’s sheltered waters and varied habitats attract wildlife and visitors alike. The ruins of Castle Sween overlook the southern shore, adding historical interest. Tayvallich provides a safe haven for boats at the head of Loch a' Bhealaich. The surrounding landscape offers quiet walks and scenic views across the water.
