Wieden district museum
The Bezirksmuseum Wieden stands in a former public bathhouse built in 1893, now a protected monument in Vienna’s fourth district. The museum opened in 1952 and moved into the building after the bathhouse closed in 1978. A major renovation between 1992 and 1995 transformed the space into a modern museum. The museum preserves the men’s shower hall on the first floor as an exhibition room. It also hosts a new section dedicated to the history of the ‘Tröpferlbad’ and Vienna’s fight against epidemics. Another gallery on the ground floor explores theatre, literature, music and art on the Wieden, while the first floor traces the district’s political history from the Middle Ages to today. On the second floor, visitors find the Vienna Chimney Sweep Museum. The building itself, once a public bath, reflects the district’s social and architectural past. Exhibits combine objects, documents and interactive displays to bring local history to life.
