Trinity House National Lighthouse Museum

Trinity House National Lighthouse Museum stood in Penzance, Cornwall, on the south-west coast of England. The building began as a buoy store for Trinity House, an organisation responsible for lighthouses and navigational aids. In 1989 it became the National Lighthouse Centre, displaying the national collection of lighthouse equipment. The museum included interactive exhibits that visitors could touch and explore. A recreated lighthouse keeper’s bedroom allowed people to see where keepers lived and worked. A selection of buoys from the original store was also on display. The museum held significant lighthouse memorabilia, including optics, uniforms and historical documents. It traced the history of Trinity House, which has managed lighthouses since the 16th century. Around 10,000 visitors came each year between 1989 and its closure in 2005. Trinity House decided to close the site and considered opening a replacement in Plymouth. In 2009 they confirmed the collection would not move to Plymouth, ending public access to most items. Some exhibits were later displayed at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth. The original building in Penzance no longer operates as a museum. The collection’s relocation ended the site’s role as a public display of lighthouse heritage. Trinity House continues its work maintaining aids to navigation across England’s coasts.
